Depression can affect your mood, energy, relationships, work, school, and your ability to enjoy the things that once mattered to you. Our therapists provide personalized, evidence-based treatment for teens and adults experiencing depression.
Depression can also show up as irritability, exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, loss of motivation, withdrawing from others, or simply feeling unlike yourself. Recognizing what depression looks like for you is an important first step toward feeling better.
Depression is more than feeling sad. It can affect how you think, feel, interact with others, and manage everyday responsibilities. Symptoms can look different from one person to another and may change over time.
Depression may include persistent sadness or emptiness, irritability, loss of interest, low energy, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, withdrawing from others, or struggling to keep up with everyday responsibilities.
Not everyone with depression appears depressed to others. Some people continue working, attending school, caring for their families, and meeting their responsibilities while privately struggling with hopelessness, guilt, exhaustion, or feeling disconnected.
Depression in teenagers does not always look like sadness. A teen may seem irritable, angry, withdrawn, exhausted, or simply “not like themselves.” You may notice changes in sleep, appetite, grades, friendships, motivation, or interest in activities they once enjoyed.
Some teens begin avoiding school, spending more time alone, or struggling to manage everyday responsibilities. Others continue going to school and participating in activities while privately feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, or disconnected.
When a teen needs more support
For some teens, weekly therapy is enough. Others may need a higher level of support when depression is significantly affecting school, relationships, daily functioning, or safety. Our practice offers individual therapy as well as a more intensive treatment option for adolescents who need additional support.

Treatment for depression is not one-size-fits-all. Our therapists take time to understand what is contributing to your symptoms, how depression is affecting your life, and what you want to change.
Treatment may draw from evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and DBT-informed strategies, as well as experiential approaches including sandtray therapy and Havening Techniques®, depending on your needs and preferences. These approaches can provide different ways to explore experiences, process emotions, develop coping skills, and work toward meaningful change.
Therapy can also help you understand patterns that contribute to depression, strengthen relationships, and begin reconnecting with parts of life that have become difficult to enjoy.
Finding a therapist who feels like the right fit matters. Our team works with teens and adults experiencing depression and will help you determine which clinician may best meet your needs.
For some people, medication can be an important part of treatment for depression, particularly when symptoms are persistent or significantly affecting daily life. Medication management is available within our practice, allowing medication management and therapy to be coordinated.
When depression has not improved as expected, it can be helpful to look more closely at the clinical picture. A comprehensive psychological evaluation may help identify factors such as ADHD, anxiety, trauma, learning differences, or other concerns that may be contributing to symptoms or complicating treatment.
When depression is significantly affecting a teen's ability to function at home, at school, or in relationships—or when safety becomes a concern—weekly therapy may not be enough. Our adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program provides more frequent therapeutic support while allowing teens to continue living at home and attending school when appropriate.
We made this choice so that decisions about your treatment can be based on your clinical needs rather than the requirements of an insurance company. It also allows us to provide greater privacy and flexibility in how your care is structured.
If you have out-of-network benefits, our administrative team can help you understand those benefits, and we can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
We also believe cost should not automatically prevent someone from accessing therapy. Sliding-scale appointments may be available with some of our clinicians, and we offer lower-fee therapy with supervised interns for individuals and families who need a more affordable option.
We will never assign a diagnosis solely for the purpose of obtaining insurance reimbursement.
Depression can make it difficult to imagine that things could feel different. Whether you have been struggling for a few weeks or have tried treatment before without getting the results you hoped for, we can help you determine the next step.
Our team provides depression therapy for teens and adults in Cary, Pittsboro, and Cornelius, with virtual therapy available throughout North Carolina.
Depression can look different from person to person. Persistent sadness, irritability, loss of interest, low motivation, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, withdrawal, or feeling hopeless can all be reasons to consider therapy. You do not have to wait until symptoms become severe to ask for help.
Treatment is individualized. Depending on the person, our clinicians may incorporate approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), DBT-informed strategies, experiential therapy, sandtray therapy, EFT tapping, trauma-focused approaches, and Havening Techniques®. Your therapist will work with you to determine what approaches fit your needs and goals.
Yes. We provide individual therapy for teens experiencing depression. When a teen needs more support than weekly therapy can provide, our adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program may also be an option.
Medication management is available within our practice. This allows therapy and psychiatric care to be coordinated when medication is appropriate.
Sometimes persistent depression warrants taking a closer look at what may be contributing to the symptoms. Depending on your situation, we may recommend a different therapeutic approach, medication management, or a comprehensive psychological evaluation to better understand factors that could be complicating treatment.
We are out-of-network with insurance companies. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, our administrative team can help you understand those benefits, and we can provide a superbill that you may submit for possible reimbursement.
Yes. Sliding-scale appointments may be available with some clinicians, and lower-fee therapy may be available with supervised interns. Availability varies, so ask our administrative team about current options.
